COSTUMES
As I grew as an artist , so did my contact list. Through the Grande Prairie Centre for Creative Arts, I sold my puppets at their Artist Corner and they invited me to participate in the Annual Wearable Art show. I’ve always been creative and like to “sew” clothes for my cats and dolls, even myself. On $5 Friday at he thrift store, I’d stuff 1 bag full of table cloths, curtains and bedsheets then sew all weekend. I put together a runway show with a friend for our parents, which was interesting to say the least. Halloween and cool themed events are some of my favourite days. This love costumes and recycling fit perfectly with the wearable art show concept. I repurposed many different items to create my pieces.
The first year, I used plastic bread clips for my bread clip dress “Changing of the seasons”. The following years included a diving dress inspired by a sunken ship “Sinking of Helma Hooker”, “ “The Magical Trumpeter Swan and the Great Grey Owl”. The final year, I entered with a melting iceberg reveal “Bear-ly Making it” which garnered 1st place.
This eventually led to my solo “Upcycle Fashion” show at the Centre for Creative Arts in 2015. I also created props and costumes at the local theatre and film productions during this time. Being a part of several 48 Hour Film Challenges certainly tested my creativity under pressure.
After years of growing my passions in GP, it was once time to return to CapU for my certificate for Costume for Stage and Film. I graduated in 2018 and started working immediately on Hallmark movies. I had worked enough hours to apply to the union and started working on bigger projects. Always expanding, learning new and interesting things. When the pandemic halted working in the film industry, I took my skills in a new direction, making jewelry
